Vaughan Poutawera

Vaughan is a consultant surgeon carrying out general and trauma orthopaedic surgery, with a particular interest in adult hip and knee surgery and joint replacements.

Vaughan studied for his MBChB at the University of Otago Medical School, Dunedin, New Zealand. He completed his New Zealand orthopaedic training and gained his Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship (FRACS) in 2008, before taking up further Orthopaedic Fellowships in hip and knee preservation and reconstruction at the University of Toronto, Canada, and the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

He is a member of the Pacific Islands Orthopaedic Association and regularly travels to teach orthopaedic surgery in a number of countries in the Pacific.

As a member of the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team, Vaughan was part of the team deployed in Fiji in 2016 to help manage the large number of patients suffering from storm-related injuries following Cyclone Winston. He also travelled to work with the Australian Medical Assistance Team in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan left more than 6000 people dead in its destructive path in 2013.
