Along with his enjoyment of general orthopaedic practice, James is particularly interested in foot and ankle surgery, hip and knee joint replacement surgery and paediatric orthopaedic surgery.
After completing an MSc and BHB, James went on to study medicine at the University of Auckland Medical School. He trained for his orthopaedic qualifications in New Zealand before heading to Sydney to take up his Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship. He then travelled to Ireland, to take up a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin, Ireland, in 2017. He is now using his diverse surgical skills to help his patients in the Bay of Plenty to regain their mobility and independence. James finds orthopaedic surgery as fascinating today as when he began his training; however, it is his patients who are always the focus of his surgery. He takes time to discuss with them the right treatment for their circumstances and a plan for their recovery. Since returning to New Zealand, James has become a member of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. James gains particular satisfaction from his work as a director in the Orthopacifix Charitable Trust, an organisation that supports the work of New Zealand orthopaedic surgeons in carrying out voluntary orthopaedic care in Pacific communities. Educating medical staff at local orthopaedic clinics and carrying out disaster relief are an important part of this charitable work, which is focused on improving health care in the Pacific Islands.
