David is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Grace Hospital with a special interest in spinal surgery.
David commenced his tertiary study in mechanical engineering before going on to study medicine at the University of Otago. After completing orthopaedic training, David travelled overseas to Edinburgh and Brisbane for fellowships in knee and spine surgery. These were supplemented with a number of shorter visits to specialist centres, gaining exposure to specific areas. While the focus of his work is with spinal conditions, he also enjoys general orthopaedic surgery including hip and knee joint replacements. Spinal surgery is a challenging and yet exciting field. Careful assessment and patient-centred decision-making allow solutions to be tailored to each patient. When it comes to having surgery, the experienced team at Grace are supported with specialised equipment and technology to help deliver positive surgical outcomes. Education is an important part of surgical practice. David has completed a Masters in Surgical Education through the University of Melbourne. He enjoys being involved with the teaching of surgical trainees at Tauranga Hospital and combines his interest in education with charitable humanitarian work in the Pacific Islands through the Orthopacifix Charitable Trust. <Find out more - www.orthopacifix.kiwi>. David also works with the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team and New Zealand Defence Force as an orthopaedic surgeon. He is married with two young sons.
