About

MBChB (Auckland), FRACS, Post-graduate diploma in Surgical Anatomy (Credit), ANZTBCRS Australia and New Zealand Training Board in colon and rectal surgery.

General and Colorectal Surgeon at the Tauranga Specialist Centre, Grace Hospital and Tauranga Hospital.

Early in his medical training, Benjamin became interested in the field of colorectal surgery. This led to his extensive sub-specialty training in the field of colorectal surgery, with expertise in minimally invasive, the latest robotic and laparoscopic techniques. He also has a sub-specialty interest in minimally invasive hernia surgery, using the latest approaches and techniques to improve each patient’s recovery and long-term health.

Benjamin has completed the exclusive Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship training programme. His colorectal fellowship training included a year at each of three hospitals: Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, and North Shore Hospital in Auckland.   Benjamin now employs international best-practice techniques in treating his patients in the Bay of Plenty.

Laparoscopic surgery, one of the techniques Benjamin uses, is a minimally invasive approach to abdominal surgery and offers many benefits to patients. It is a safe and precise surgical technique that not only limits surgical scars but also the trauma of surgery, with better results in successful healing for patients, generally leading to a faster recovery time than would traditional open surgery. Patients return home better able to resume their normal routine and activities.

Benjamin takes time to discuss with his patients the different procedures he would recommend in treating each person’s condition. He advises his patients as they decide on the right treatment for them and their circumstances. Benjamin is committed to providing the highest quality and leading-edge surgical treatment with compassion and care.

Benjamin undertakes research in general and in colorectal surgery, and has published extensively in medical journals.

He continues to further the education of our future doctors by providing training and facilitating research at Tauranga Hospital, and has a particular interest in improving the health of Māori people.

Benjamin is currently the chair of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Indigenous Health Committee, working towards equitable health outcomes for Māori.

Whenever possible, he enjoys family activities with his wife and four children, especially fishing, bush walks, and outdoor activities in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty.
