Nigel is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, with a particular interest in his sub-specialty area, which includes hip, knee and shoulder replacement, revision hip and knee replacement, and knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgery.

His orthopaedic practice is dominated by lower limb arthroplasty surgery, in which he has 15 years’ experience. He uses the Exeter hip replacement system and the Stryker Triathlon knee replacement system in his surgical practice. Both systems have excellent long-term results, the Exeter system having the best forty-year implant survival published results.

After completing his general surgical training and obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Nigel trained in orthopaedic surgery at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore, at the University of Wales, Cardiff. He then spent his Fellowship year at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.

His first consultant post was in a rural hospital in Barnstaple for two years, followed by his appointment to the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre, Exeter, from 2001 to 2014. During his time in Exeter, Nigel was lead clinician for trauma, and the Director of the Department.

A current member of the British Orthopaedic Association, Nigel was also a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society for 14 years. He is a member of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, and of the Hip, Knee, and Shoulder and Elbow Societies.

Nigel has published work in both trauma and orthopaedics in a variety of areas, including hip, knee and shoulder conditions. His particular areas of interest at present include bone cement penetration into bone during knee replacements to increase the longevity of implants, techniques to reduce blood loss in knee replacement and tendon repair in hip replacement.

Nigel believes it is essential that patients are as involved as they choose to be in decisions about the management of their orthopaedic conditions. He thinks it is important that they understand the consequences of using more experimental techniques compared with using those techniques which have been shown to stand the test of time.

Nigel moved to New Zealand, and particularly rural New Zealand, to give his family the fantastic opportunity of living in a clean, green, multicultural society.

Nigel finds a great deal of satisfaction in treating a rural population that has a significant need for trauma and orthopaedic surgery. At the same time, he has been able to work at Grace Hospital, offering the expertise he has gained over the years in a major centre to those patients who have the opportunity to choose their surgeon privately.
